Tens of thousands of vibrantly dressed attendees gathered in the heart of Ethiopia's capital for the yearly thanksgiving festival over the past days.

This thanksgiving celebration is observed by the Oromo, the biggest community, and occurs at the end of the nation's main monsoon period.

Annually, participants come together around revered rivers and lakes to show appreciation to their higher powers for the lush vegetation that the rains have provided.

"I have participated in Irreecha for the previous nine years," stated young adult one attendee.

"In my view, Irreecha represents my heritage, it demonstrates the pride and greatness of my people."

Traditional clothing and jewelry

Males, females, the elderly and the younger generation all participate, decorated in striking attire and accessories.

They vocalize, move rhythmically, tell tales and place freshly cut grass and blossoms in liquid - representing vitality, rebirth and optimism.

International visitors at festival

This festival brings in participants from all regions of Ethiopia, guests travel from around the world.

"I visited the previous year - it was so good, so beautiful, I brought my kids with me this year," expressed one visitor, originating from Belfast in Northern Ireland.

"It's incredible. Everybody welcomes you, each person shows warmth and offers greetings."

The opening day of the festival took place on the weekend in Addis Ababa. On the following day, participants made their way to a provincial location, a settlement near the capital.

Although the festival has its roots in traditional beliefs, it is now practiced by the larger part of the community, irrespective of their religion.
