Previous FBI director James Comey has pleaded not guilty to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and hindering a lawmaking procedure.
The former director's legal representative submitted the response representing him in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.
His attorney declared he would attempt to have the legal matter terminated for multiple causes including that his the accused, a critic of former President Trump, was being targeted.
James Comey was charged shortly after the former president pushed his attorney general to take action against him.
Judicial Process
During the hearing on Wednesday, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald told the court they intended to file several legal requests to dismiss the case before a legal hearing, stating the prosecution was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully assigned to handle the case.
James Comey's legal matter was originally handled by Erik Siebert, who resigned under scrutiny from the former president after his investigation into a different opponent - the New York official - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.
Judicial Environment
James Comey came across in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his attorneys and making jokes. He was joined by his spouse, his wife and daughter his daughter, a government attorney who the previous administration dismissed.
Following the reading to the court read his rights and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, Mr Comey was questioned if he understood the charges.
"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he told the judge.
Historical Information
James Comey was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about a few months into Trump's first administration as national leader. At the moment, Mr Comey was directing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Russia and Trump's campaign.
While in office, James Comey sparked a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Charges against Clinton were not filed, resulting in disapproval from conservative politicians as well.
Current Allegations
Prosecutors allege the former director provided false information to Congress during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They say he misled the upper house by saying he had not authorized an individual at the FBI to release to media organizations data about the agency probes.
Prosecutors also charge Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, hinder and delay" the legislative group by giving misleading testimony to it.
Public Statements
Through a recording James Comey published to his Instagram after he was accused, he said he was not guilty and alleged the former president of conducting himself like a "autocrat".
"My family and I have understood for a long time that there are consequences to standing up to the former president," he commented. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "Thus initiate a legal proceeding."
The charges against Mr Comey surfaced after the former president posted on digital channels demanding his top legal official, Ms Bondi, charge James Comey and additional individuals.
