Brave Rail Employee Endures Severe Wounds During Multiple Stabbing Incident on High-Speed Train
A valiant train employee who stepped in to save passengers during a mass stabbing incident on a high-speed train has sustained life-threatening injuries, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
Details of the Frightening Event
CCTV video allegedly depicts the staff member trying to halt the attacker as the train journeyed between a city and Huntingdon in the county. Bystanders described a frightening 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied passengers running through carriages.
The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, remains in detention for interrogation. Authorities declared a significant event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.
Crisis Reaction and Aftermath
The event on the weekend led to 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several individuals have now been discharged from hospital.
A bystander filmed the suspect brandishing a large knife and being subdued with a Taser as he confronted officers on the station. He was allegedly heard shouting, "End my life, end my life."
“This terrible incident has affected many people. We are thinking of the victims and their families – especially the courageous employee of train personnel whose relatives are being assisted by trained officers,” said a high-ranking law enforcement official.
Labor Response and Calls for Action
Train associations were swift to commend employees and call for more action. One union leader said he would be “requesting urgent meetings with authorities, train companies and police to ensure that we have the best possible support, tools and robust procedures in place”.
Another union representative encouraged the train operator and authorities “to act quickly to examine safety, to help the affected workers, and to ensure nothing like this happens again”.
Operator Praised for Rapid Thinking
The operator who stopped the train at Huntingdon was reported as being “very shaken” but “good”, and has been commended by association officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.
“The driver didn’t halt the train in the center of two stops where it’s clearly difficult for the first responders to reach, but he carried on going until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was almost already there,” explained a union representative.
Additional Information
Police stated they got the initial emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
An observer recounted at first wondering if the event was a holiday prank, but soon realized from individuals' expressions that it was serious.
Police have confirmed there is nothing to indicate the event was a terror-related incident and have asked the community to provide with any additional information.
Train operations on the impacted line are expected to have delays until the following day, with passengers recommended to postpone their travel where feasible.
Individuals with details that could help the inquiry are asked to contact police by texting a specific number with a reference code.
