Significant Web Disruption Impacts Numerous Sites and Apps

A large-scale web outage has affected many websites and mobile apps globally, as users reporting troubles connecting to the web after problems at the cloud computing system.

The affected services encompass the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, as well as multiple Amazon-operated platforms like its primary shopping site and the Ring doorbell doorbell company.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted as well as its affiliates the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with further notifications of difficulties using the HM Revenue and Customs site on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, multiple Ring users used networks to complain their doorbells were not working.

In the UK alone, reports of disruptions on individual platforms totaled the tens of thousands for each app.

Amazon reported that the issue started in the eastern region of the America at AWS, a section that supplies essential online framework for many businesses, who lease space on AWS infrastructure. The cloud platform is the biggest global cloud computing system.

Just after the start of the day (PDT) in the United States (morning UK time), the company announced “increased problem frequencies and slowdowns” for AWS services in a region on the Atlantic seaboard of the US. The widespread consequence seemed to hit platforms worldwide, with the problem monitoring service indicating issues with the same sites in various regions.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that reports on online failures, further indicated a increase in issues on that morning, including several cases situated in the Virginia area, the site of the AWS US-East-1 zone where AWS said the outage started.
