Federal Government Prepared to Send Dozens Law Enforcement to the Bay Area

The White House appeared poised on Wednesday to send scores of government officers to the San Francisco Bay Area for a large-scale crackdown on immigration, sparking criticism from local politicians.

Information of the Mission

Information of the mission were gradually becoming clear, but it will reportedly include over a hundred law enforcement personnel, as reported. The personnel are scheduled to begin utilizing the military installation in the East Bay, across the bay from San Francisco. It was not confirmed whether state soldiers would join the operation.

Government Response

The deployment is the result of months of warnings by the administration to take action against the Democratic-run city. California’s governor Gavin Newsom denounced the decision, describing it as “straight from the autocrat's manual”.

“He sends out unidentified officers, he dispatches customs officers, he dispatches immigration officials, he creates anxiety and fear in the neighborhood so that he can lay claim for handling that by deploying the national guard,” Newsom said. “This mirrors the incendiary extinguishing the inferno.”

Municipal Planning

San Francisco is the latest major city targeted by the federal effort of widespread apprehensions. The deployment is anticipated to provoke a showdown between the federal government and local leaders who have vowed to prevent militarized immigration enforcement in the city.

San Franciscans have been gearing up for weeks for Trump to fulfill ongoing warnings to send troops to the city. At a Wednesday public announcement, San Francisco’s municipal chief reiterated that the city was equipped.

“For months, we have been expecting the likelihood of a potential government operation in our city,” said the mayor, noting that he had taken further executive actions on Wednesday to “bolster the city’s support for our newcomer populations, and make certain our offices are coordinated before any government operation.”

Legal Framework

Regardless of legal challenges to missions in a multiple urban areas, including Chicago, Oregon and LA, Trump has claimed “unquestioned power” to dispatch the national guard in cities, pointing to the Insurrection Act which allows presidents specific authority to send forces on US soil.

Public Response

Newsom – who previously served as San Francisco’s city leader – had committed to step in “right away” to a operation in the city. “The notion that the national administration can deploy troops into our cities with no valid reason based on facts, no supervision, no answerability, no respect for state sovereignty – it’s a direct assault on the rule of law,” he said on Wednesday.

Local organizations, including advocacy organizations established during the previous presidential term, have prepared to quickly mobilize a large protest in the city, as well as vigils at public spaces.

Local Effect

In San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood, a predominantly Latino community, elected official stated to media last week she and her voters had been bracing for this situation. “The point that employees avoid workplaces, when people of color are afraid to go outdoors without the concern of national personnel racially profiling and arresting them, the moment when families keep children home, grow too frightened to go to the food market or doctor,” she said. “Our ongoing preparations in the Mission is fundamentally a closure the extent of which we have not witnessed since Covid.”

Military Status

Roughly several hundred out of 4,000 state state soldiers continue under national command under an order from Trump. Approximately two hundred of them had been sent to the neighboring state, where they were remaining in uncertainty during a court case over their assignment.

This week, Newsom said he had requested the local soldiers under his control to manage charity kitchens amid the government shutdown.
