Doris Makes Irish Selection While Joe McCarthy Left Out

Ireland rugby squad selection news

Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has selected skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish squad for the fall matches, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.

Doris, who has not played since having shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to Leinster training, with doubts lingering whether he will be fit to face the All Blacks in the US on November 1.

Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the first British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.

Northern province player Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash also miss out because of fitness concerns, while full-back Keenan was previously excluded after having hip surgery following the Lions tour.

Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped member in the 34-player group, but the Irish Rugby Football Union says new Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".

After playing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a repeat of their 2016 meeting, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and it's a chance for the veteran players and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to Georgia and the Lobos," said the coach, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again compete for the first-choice number 10 spot. The number 10 jersey is remains up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first time in the upcoming URC game at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 selected with the coach deciding not to calling up the province's Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has picked British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer Test victories over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran cohort of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the only new name in the Ireland forwards. The front rower has been in two of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship games this season and played in the second string's loss by the English in the English city earlier this year.

McCarthy was selected in interim boss O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a international appearance.

Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those Tests, is retained, and veteran Ulster lock Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.

Conan, who started each of the Lions Tests during the tour, is set to deputise for the captain if the captain does not regain fitness in time to face New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
