Tuchel Questions Wembley Fan Atmosphere Following Comfortable Win Over Wales.
Thomas Tuchel expressed his sadness that the Three Lions team did not enjoy greater encouragement from the home spectators during their commanding triumph over Wales on Thursday night.
The manager was happy to see his squad continue their winning momentum, with goals from Rogers, Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the opening quarter settling the game. Yet, he was unhappy with the mood at the national stadium.
“With one and a half sessions to prepare against a well-trained team and we performed excellently,” Tuchel remarked. “We could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We couldn’t score the additional goals. The stadium was silent. We didn’t get any energy back from the crowd. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you deliver in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them escape. If you hear just Wales fans for 30 minutes, it’s regrettable because the team deserved more support today.”
“I stand by my words. There’s nothing more than being 3-0 in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a greater support in periods where it gets difficult.”
“In the second half, to support us, there was a bit too much backing for the opposition. It might have aided us to recharge, but that’s the way it went and so be it.”
Squad Decisions Vindicated by Performance
Away from potentially starting a fight with supporters, the manager also created controversy by excluding Jude Bellingham and Foden from his squad. But the decision was backed up by Rogers delivering another standout performance in the No 10 position and scoring his first international goal.
“He is what he is,” Tuchel noted. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is competing for his place.”
Wales Manager Hopes for Lessons from Defeat
The Wales manager expressed hope that Wales, who face Belgium in a key qualifying match on next week, learn from their awful first-half display.
“This is why I scheduled this game,” Bellamy commented. “I wanted to assess where we are. Where do we want to go? Who do we want to be? Today fills me with inspiration.”
Fitness Worry for Watkins
Ollie Watkins was substituted at the break after colliding with a post and will be a doubt when the national team face their next opponents in the Latvian capital in a qualifier on Tuesday.
