UN Removes Penalties on President of Syria Before White House Visit
Security Council representatives gave the green light to an American proposal ending penalties on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his White House visit the following week.
He was appointed interim leader following his leadership in a rebel offensive that removed Bashar al-Assad in winter 2024, bringing to a close over a decade of internal conflict.
The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.
Previously, he faced United Nations restrictions in his role as head of the Muslim faction the HTS movement, previously associated with al-Qaeda. America delisted HTS from a list of global extremist entities this past July.
More Penalties Removed
The UN also removed penalties against the Syrian interior official the interior minister.
Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of the sanctions, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation toward America and to friendly nations for backing the country and its population."
Imminent Washington Talks
President Sharaa's presidential meeting on Monday occurs subsequent to US President Donald Trump said the Syrian leader demonstrated "substantial headway" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.
Both presidents held discussions for the first time during May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of Arab nations.
Following that encounter, the US president described the Syrian as a "strong individual" with a "very strong past".
His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country prior to breaking relations in 2016.
Earlier American Trip
The upcoming meeting does not represent his initial visit to America in the current year. During September, he became the initial Syrian president to present to the global assembly in New York in almost 60 years.
In his speech, he said Syria was "regaining its deserved status within the global community" and expressed solidarity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
