The Golden State is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.
For the first time in 25 years, every region of the state is enduring water scarcity. This landmark event arrives after difficult years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened blaze threats and challenged its massive agricultural sector.
A Chart Reveals Zero Abnormally Dry Areas
The latest assessment from the U.S. Drought Monitor confirmed that the entire state is without any level of drought. This change came after weeks of significant storms that replenished key lakes like Shasta and Oroville far beyond their typical levels.
“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” noted a climate scientist.
From Intense Storms to Wet Holidays
The path to this point included severe and lethal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, causing significant overflow, power outages, and deaths. Although that weather started to mitigate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.
As late as late December, areas like Modoc County were considered unusually parched. Heavy rains at the start of the new year washed away those remaining dry spots.
A Crucial Snowpack Is Below Average
But, authorities caution that the end of drought status does not mean complete water security. Current readings of the high-elevation snow show it at only about 70% of the historical norm.
This mountain snow, which supplies a significant portion of the state's usable water as it thaws later in the year, is a critical factor for long-term water security. Hydrology managers have emphasized that it is premature to draw conclusions for the coming year.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” commented a hydrology section chief. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
Even as the official status indicates no dryness, attention turns to maintaining this positive water situation throughout the months to come.
