A defense official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible security risks associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been advised to refrain from talking about classified matters in any vehicles.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

In a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to discuss secret material while travelling in Chinese cars.

He stated that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however stressed that security is a issue in every contemporary vehicles.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”

Wider Defence Context

This revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable China to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly shining lasers at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

This broader defence environment highlights the significance of robust measures and vigilance in every areas of official activities, including transport use to discussions practices.
